In 2020, Vans announced the return of its "Foot the Bill" program in response to COVID-19’s devastating effects on small business throughout the country. During this initiative, Vans teamed up with community-driven small businesses to produce and sell branded merchandise, with net proceeds going directly to each business. The company reached out to Eubie Blake Cultural Center and since I was serving as the Exhibitions Committee Chair at the time, and artist relationships were my responsibility, I was tapped to design a shoe that incorporated a licensed image from an artist EBCC had worked with in the past. In honor of our ancestors, I chose to license Megan Lewis’ “I still don’t know John Wayne” painting and incorporate it into the design that included red, blue, and yellow color blocks as well as the words “Shuffle Along” on the back of the shoe - an homage to Eubie Blake’s most famous composition.
