EXHIBITION STATEMENT

Our understanding of history is heavily influenced by the use of objects. They hold an immense amount of inadvertent power depending on how they are used.

Repercussions: Redefining the Black Aesthetic explores the genealogy, spiritual, political, and economic power that objects possess. The artworks in this exhibition each accentuate specific materials that assist the artists in telling their personal stories and social commentaries. This exhibition is a reflection of what contemporary Black artists are using to redefine the term “fine art”.

Through thoughtful creation, each artist has produced works that examine their lineages, pay homage to lost loved ones, uncover histories whose remnants still affect us today, and question the norms and propogandas we experience on a daily basis.

More than 50 years removed from the 1960s’ ‘new abstraction’ movement, in which Black abstract artists vehemently inserted themselves into the conversations affecting the modern world, emerging artists of today have a similar responsibility. During this ‘age of information’, it is imperative for artists to continue to take risks and ensure that their perspectives are seen and acknowledged.
